Disturbed Week Ahead

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

...looks like, for the first week of May, could be an interesting week. :)
With a change of weather systems, Auckland has already copped it, now for the rest of the country, this week could see some weather
thunder may be a possibilty here in eastern districts, possibly Thursday at the moment \:D/

Just looks like a westerly flow arriving for us but usually the SI West coast &south coast cops a westerly flow as far as storms is concerned :P

The first week of May is often warm then it really packsup in the 3rd week when the jetstream stays over the country ;)

Tasman sea is looking very unstable tonight.

Should be some good thunderstorms in the west.

Yes, hopefully something comes here for eastern districts. These NW type winds should get things warmed up so thats good. As long on the day of "thunderstorms" a NE wind is preceding the front or whatever.

We've had rain and some hail here for the past few hours. I noticed they're predicting more snow (down to 800m) for the area again tomorrow afternoon.

it will be intereseting to see what happens to the aproaching next cold front when it passes under the stationary jet stream which is over the far north at the moment (we are right on the edge of it here, one half of the sky is blue, the other half white then gray

The weather has closed-in here quickly. Low, low cloud, rain (snow on the tops) and getting quite cold.

The southwest change has arrived here at 9.00pm,the unusual sound of heavy rain on the roof is great.
Looks like it will be all over quickly looking at the satellite.

Some action on the coast down from Ashburton according to the 9PM radar. The change just hit central Chch a few minutes ago - still dry as I write, but this could easily change very soon.

When the horizontal rain drives hard into the windows making them buckle we will know the change is here

Well no surprise - the rain arrived here about 10 minutes ago. Quite an intense shower, but only liquid stuff, and no sign (that I've noticed - John, Aaron have you seen/heard any?) of any thunderstorm activity.

Yeah, the southerly squall went through here at 2210hrs, solid rain with 3.3mm to 11pm. No electrical activity whatsoever, quite dead. :x If Metstrike shows anything, theyre lying.

Yes Aaron, I got your emails. Much thought involved but hopefully I'll get back to you tomorrow on them.
In the meanwhilst, I'm off to bed. Had a busy day, shifting top-soil

An area of coldie cb crossing the Auckland region this morning. Had a real heavy shower here in the last hour. Saw lightning and heard a couple of rumbles of thunder (distant) around 3.30am this morning after I got woken by a heavy shower.

Day looks like it will fine up.

Warning - big norwest blow coming!

Unread post by tich »

Batten down the hatches - a real norwest blow is expected hit tomorrow. 8-[ Whether Chch gets the 120kph+ gusts or not (we normally get weaker gusts than inland Canty in these situations), many eastern areas certainly look like they're gonna get hammered.

Not as warm today as yesterday - a legacy of last night's cool change. Fresh snow on Ruapehu today - I'd forgotten that snow had earlier been predicted for the Desert Road for early today. Yo-yo temperatures this week, with northwesterlies alternating with colder southwest changes. Another cold change seems likely for late tomorrow and into Thursday. I gather (from looking at the Aussie weather forum) that snow has been falling to quite low levels in Tasmania today, and this is the airmass expected to reach us following the norwest blast.

We got a lot of fresh snow overnight down here. I'm hoping to see new windspeed records set on my stations tomorrow too! :-)
