North Island Low

Unread post by Andy »

Just looked at the latest model run from cola. Still early days but a nice deep low may form east of the South Island, mid next week

Probably more snow on the way, especially for the Canterbury fields if this comes off.

UNISYS and Weather on Line are suggesting the same sort of thing.

I was looking at the latest UNISYS long-range outlook just before coming on this site, and it looks scary - reminds me of the October 2000 storm. 8-[ But these systems are notoriously difficult to predict, so it probably won't get that bad, though a cold wet blast for the eastern South Island may still be likely.

Looks like a Low will develop north of NZ early next week and move over the North Island, down Just East of the South Island and be clear of the Country by Thursday.

It's looking like just the far North and East of the North Island will feel any significant effects from that Low.

Like I said, low movements are very difficult to predict several days ahead. So it now looks like Canterbury has little to worry about - no worse than a day of cold (not very cold) southerlies and showers on Wednesday. Like Spwill said, Gisborne and (most likely northern) Hawkes Bay look like feeling the full force of the system.
Further out, there might be another cold southerly blast this Saturday. ECMWF makes it out to look almost like the event of early July last year, but UNISYS just has it as a brief cold southwesterly in a disturbed west to southwest pattern set to continue for several days.
