21:30Hrs, very distant lightning to my S. Probably Brynderwyns area. Infreq. SFX on the radio at about 1 per 3min - weak.
Had some good wind up here today Max recorded was 48km/Hr @ 10:45, with a sustained 30-odd km for most of the day, calming down now with clear skies.
Gotta go - want to get the 'scope out before the moon comes up

Are you meaning that it was blatantly obvious that it was going to be unstabel and all one needed to do was to look at the sat pic as to know where storms were going to be? If so, coolThe sounding is less useful in this instance, satellite imagery will tell the story.

Quiet day up here too - lots of towers trying, but blowing out into weak, feathery anvils. This one was the last gasp of the day. 1700Hrs, just S of Kerikeri.

Came back from Wellington last night, was kind of hoping to get to see some of the front, but mostly a couple of flatish layers with some lumpy cu here and there. I suspect the other people on the flight - mostly grey / black suits - thought I was strange looking out the window the whole flight.
Cheers,
G

Go for it Steven W! and Pete, and other upper North Island people!
There looked to be a bit of thunder sometime during the past 24 hours on the Coromandle Peninsula, also a bit in Hamilton during midday or there abouts, and to the West of Hamilton on the coast (during last night or there abouts). I thought there might be a bit more action about but it doesn't looked to of been so.
But yeah, hopefully some lightning for you guys during the next couple of days! It will be good as its the weekend, people can get out and about

We may not had the lightening or the hail this year but the winter is too long and ugly and still 3 months yet to go
Remember the lousy February,The cool March The gales that went for over a month from late May till late June

I didn't have my digital camera with me. Reminds me of some of the clouds we used to get in past winters. This year has been relatively stable.

Hmm, oh well. I looked at the data on the Metstrikeweb map and saw strikes close to Hamilton (it looks like it anyway).
See below, strikes in black boxed area near Hamilton occured yesterday during the morning sometime.

Thanks for the upto date lightning info Aaron.
That storm looked to have been north of Hamilton. I think you need to be within about 10km of a thunderstorm to be aware of it.
That particular storm is interesting as it is likely to have been triggered by solar heating of land, in August!. I saw that cb building up, about 12.15pm, out to the SE of Auckland.
Air is still unstable looking today, so slight chance of thunder still.

Flew down to Queenstown yesterday morning and could see some thundery Cbs from the aircraft just out of Auckland.
Arrived to rain here and despite it being 3c in town the fresh snow level was up over 1500m. My flight was about the last able to land for the day due to low cloud.
Still overcaste here with some clearing light rain.
