Thunderstorms still look on the cards for the upper half of the North Island tomorrow. A warm moist sector spreads across North Island overnight tonight. Daytime heating tomorrow should destablise this airmass, atleast over the inland North island, ahead of a southerly change. The upper trough is not unduly cold so we are relying on sufficient surface heating occuring. There is going to be a warm layer (cap) around 650mb by the looks.

Not a bad day again in Cantab land, more CU blew up around the Peninnsula and inland directly from BP.
Other than that the NE was rather cooler this afternoon, some much wanted rain overnight although i dont know how much we will get from this low system.

Recorded a high of 26.9 C today - currently 18.2 out - its warm and still out at the moment... well took this pic about 20min ago... its about the only exciting cloud shot I can get for this week - its getting dark out now - anyway... being somewhat optimistic I am hoping for some kinda lightning or thunder within the next couple of hours *chuckle* - take care.

Yes a little bit more instability today, infact all day really.
Really blew up over BP this afternoon around 2pm as that NE kicked in and looked to be S up top, great to see though and was worth just keeping an eye on. :D

cheers.

Looking at the 850mb temperature forecasts from GFS, looks like some nice warm air to move over from Saturday onwards. Perhaps places like inland NI and BOP will see daytime highs in the mid twenties?

It will be westerly then,it will be in the east of the NI (and Canterbury) if the wind gets over the divide.

A few numbers from today: from 12Z until now Levin had 50 mm of rain. Hamilton Airport got 12 mm in one hour late morning. Highest wind gust was 70 knots at Manukau Heads (130 km/h).

So much for the forecasted drizzle by MS, when i woke up at 7am it was heavy/steady rain.
Looking back at the radar images from this morning it looks like it was fairly isolated to the north of the city, but it stopped around 9:30am and has since been the odd shower.
So from that stint of rain 6mm most of that falling within a few hours this morning.

It kind of feels thunderstormy (is that a word?) today in Christchurch. Just had an afternoon downpour in town, and I see some nice CU over to the west and around town. You know that feeling when it rains, and then the sun comes out and it smells like warm ocean rain... I love it !

Just low cloud and slight drizzle down here in Ashburton,a long way off thunderstorm weather.
V cold too after being softened up from 5 years in the tropics.

It was a rather Claytons System here in Auckland,NE lasted only a few hours at best, about 1 or 2 mm in total. The wind blown drizzle embedded in the Sc over the next few days in the SW flow will surpass it.Nice and warm at last though and some wonderful humidity.

Were well overdue for a cyclonic NNW flow with high humidity here and gales for Wellington and strong drizzly NE for the SI eastcoast.

Hit 20 here with mostly cloudy skies and a sw breeze so not bad going for here with such conditions. Tomorrow and Sat could be very warm! :-$

Update: Continuing to rise, now 23 degrees and still mostly cloud with a light Southerly

What is your exposure like?
At 1PM temperatures are 16C in Christchurch Airport, 17C in the City and in Ashburton, Culverden and Darfield. 21C at Tara Hills and Nelson, which are the warmest in NZ at the moment (followed by Lower Hutt, then Kawerau).

No, no more exposed. Conditions were quite different along the city this moning with the port hills side of the city seeing more broken cloud. Jeffs also got to 22.5 degees and he has a very reliable station. A very light SW allowed for the heating before the NE kicked in an back down to 17-18 now. The 23 only lasted 20 mins or so. The temp would hover up and down between 19 and 23 as clouds would hult the sun and quite substancial declines and increases in temps were taking place. Cloud cover was much greater near the airport side and fairly low. I was going to say quite a variance earlier.

...seriously, only 18.8C today but it seemed to be hotter in the sun out of the SE wind, which became NE this afternoon.
Interesting cloud forms this afternoon, with Cs layers and halos, aslo some unusual lenticular forms to the north side of BP. (not BAP).
