Big swells generated by Ivy

Unread post by tich »

These cyclones/storm systems produce big swells to exposed coasts and this last one seems to be created some really big ones to the northeast of the NI. Kinda like the effect of very cold southerly outbreaks in winter to bring snow to places that don't normally get it, the surf-sized waves produced by these storms push onto beaches that one normally can't surf (unless one's a midget  ). I'm thinking of beaches like those of Auckland's North Shore. Any webcams for these beaches?

BTW probably the most extreme example of this in recent times in NZ would've been Cyclone Drena, with heavy ocean sized waves pushing right up the Firth of Thames - doing quite alot of damage to Thames township. Similar big waves pushed into Tasman Bay, pounding the coastline west of Nelson, where there's normally no surf at all.

Windsurfing workmate reported 6 meter swells breaking 100 meters out from Takapuna beach (Auck North Shore) Sounds a bit suss, but he swears it came from a good source!

There were the best waves in 10 years apparently - I have been body boarding for anumber of years and hang out for these cyclone swells - can be lethal if you don't know what you are doing , its a price to pay for a rush of andrenaline - exciting stuff at Sandy Bay near Whangarei on Sunday - reported height of 5 mertres , but i know its too big to surf there cos you just can't get out. I was digging holes - trying to get Saturday water run off away from my new drive -suck!

Surf in unusual places - check out this:

That's inside Sydney Harbour! (Rangitoto Island would probably rule out a similar scene in Waitemata Harbour) Most of the Ocean beaches around the city were closed by massive waves. Chch Press had a (probably exaggerated) photo of a huge wave at Manly on the same day.

If this image doesn't load, try typing surf "sydney harbour" into Google and you should get to the Sydney Morning Herald page with that photo on it.
