Fiber Optic Cable

Unread post by Tornado Tim »

Took a walk after seeing this huge CB, and stumbled to see this nice big thing on my neighbours lawn...
Looks like fibre optic cable install plans are on the cards for Matangi!
I told Telstra clear to install some here, does this mean they are taking my advice really seriously or is this a John Key initiative?
Anyway looks like I am going to get ultra fast internet soon! WOOOOHOOO! :D  \:D/ =D> _b
Who else has got Fibre optic cable, I believe Christchurch residents get it.... and people in welly and Kapiti?

I have a feeling fibre optic internet is only available to businesses in CBD's acrosss NZ but I could be wrong and they're starting to deploy it now?

It's not FO but Cable Internet delivered by TelstraClear. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_internet ) Aucklanders could've enjoyed the same service WLG and CHC gets but people complained about the 'ugliness' of the cable on the overhead power lines. 0_o

They chant on about 'super fast broadband' but what's the point with such low and expensive data caps and so much congestion across the Southern Cross cable to North America it runs at a crawl. I think TelstraClear is the best for this though.

Don't know about you, but with an Xtra ProPlan I've got 40GB/month and a really good bitrate, even on the eastern part of the City ...
When I think in France you have 20Gb/s lines with phone and TV and VoD for the equivalent of (roughly) 70$/month ...

Yea I knew that telstra clear offered it around those areas, question is which 1 is installing it the govt or telstra?
Good on telstra anyway at least they are going away from telecom and there ever rising line rental charges.
They are also against Sect 92A, which is even better!
Telstra is probably id the best ISP hardly any downs and speed is really really fast!(even for DSL)

Auckland was in the process of getting a high speed fibre residential network about 10 years ago. telecom had sunk about 5-10 mill into the project, when out the blue, all the contractors contracts where terminiated.

The reason, telecom had discovered adsl and no longer needed to dig up the streets to deliver high speed internet.
I believe half of papakura or was it pakaranga, never can remember still have fibre buried in their streets.

fibre isnt the oasis it's made out to be, it's still a fixed capacity medium, with multiple users on the same line, which leads to degraded service.

Adsl is at least your pair of wires back to the high speed backbone of the internet

I don't know where you got that idea from.

Fibre is capable of delivering speed into the Gigabits (up to 10's of kilometers or more depending upon the speed), I'm afraid the low specification copper twisted pair they use over a few kilometers only goes into Megabits. That's a factor of a thousand better for fibre.

Unfortunately fibre still is a more expensive medium. But that is changing all the time. In the next couple of years expect all voice based telecommunications to change to an IP based format. Fibre directly to the home will follow, and with it, vastly improved bandwidth, but only when the technology is matured and gets cheaper.

Telecom abandoned the project (which was a trial) because it wasn't cost effective.
