More old storm photos

Unread post by NZstorm »

Here are some past Cumulonimbus pictures. All were taken in the Auckland area.

Easter pictures will be up early next week.

Image Cumulonimbus (Thunderstorm)

Image Cumulonimbus congestus.

Image Cumulonimbus congestus

This photo was taken from Te Atatu looking toward the Auckland Isthmus. Freash updraught on the side of a mature thunderstorm (note anvil behind).
Storm would have been over the Remuera area. Sea breeze convergence here.

Image Towering Cumulus

Towering cumulus taken from the roof of my house. Photo was taken late in the day. This cloud developed into an intense thunderstorm as it moved SE into the Waikato. I observed lightning well into the night with flashes every 2-3 seconds at its peak. The developing Cumulonimbus can be seen in the image below against the setting sun. I wished i had chased this storm, it turned out to be a beauty. NZ Herald reported one Waikato location as recording 80mm in less than an hour.

Image Developing thunderstorm

This thunderstorm rapidly developed over the Western Suburbs of Auckland. Note the smoke plume at the bottom of the photo. The NE breeze was feeding into the storm. Winds behind where a westerly sea breeze. Hense convergence zone here. The image below was taken just a few minutes later. The anvil from this storm eventually covered the whole of Auckland.

Thats enough from me.

Just thought I would add that the last two images were taken from the top of Mt Eden. The sea area in the foreground on that storm is the upper Waitemata. Storm wouls have been over the Kemu area.

Fantastic Steve, those images are really awsome! Can't wait untill you've got your easter pictures. I've got a few pics of Cb's but I wouldn't know how to put them up here, or is it easier than I think. I'll have a chat to my computer wizz brother to see if he can figure it out.

Hi Aaron,

Yes, get your photos onto a URL first.

The above photos were taken from the mid to late 1990's, I can't remember dates but all in the months of February or March. I'll put some recent cb images up shortly(last couple years).

Last couple of summers in Auckland have been quite stable though, but the winters have been very unstable.

Unfortunately, the phpBB forum doesn't have a way of storing images itself "at present". A 3rd party "MOD" is available but I'd want to test it on a separate installation before attempting to add it to this forum !

When I have the time .... ;)

Anyway, great photos Steven.

Met-related trivia I discovered this week: the expression "being on cloud nine" comes from the ordering of cloud classifications agreed at the end of the 19th century and refers to Cb ! Must have been talking about storm chasers :)

The classification was re-ordered later and Cb was moved to ten so it doesn't make sense anymore (nine is Cu) !

Cheers,
Steven

Nice images - I love the one with the smoke.

I used to work in Henderson and can recall we used to get some pretty impressive rainfall...there seems to be almost a band that goes through Henderson, Whenuapai and over to Glenfield which seem to get the really heavy rain.

Cheers,

G

I agree Graeme. Most strong convection in the Auckland region seems to occur out to the west/northwest of Auckland. I guess the Waitakere ranges is part of the reason why.

A few more images

Image

20th May 2001. This is one of a number of maritime cb's that drifted across the south of Auckland. This photo is looking south from my place, this thunderstorm would be over the Pukekohe area, which about 40km distant from my position. Weather stayed fine over Auckland city. A moist westerly flow was over the area. Dewpoints upto 15C.

Image Developing cumulonimbus

23rd December 2001. Developing cb over the Clevedon hill country.
Photo taken from Botonay Downs (where i was working at the time).
This particular cb remained quite persistent over this area for the afternoon, suggesting convergence was behind its development.
Weather over the rest of Auckland stayed fine but there was thunder over the Waikato on this afternoon. temperature 25C, dewpiont 18C

Image same cloud again

Image Same storm a few hours later

The cb now mature stage....this photo taken from home.

Hi Steven

Brilliant additional photos there. On your sixth photo you say note the smoke plume at the bottom of the photo, I can see it, so does this mean to suggest there were some twirly type of winds if you know what I mean causing the smoke plume or was it just a fire?

Aaron, the smoke plume gives the wind direction away, freash breeze feeding into the storm. Northeasterly.

I'll post one more image. 12th January 2002. Widespread thunderstorms developed over the Waikato through to Hawkes Bay. See satellite picture
http://satellite.landcareresearch.co.nz ... d12012.txt
The upper air sounding is also provided here. The air was thoroughly unstable to 10,000m with LI -3.1 The cloud image here was taken near Huntly. Lots of lightning with this cb and reports of 1cm hail from Raglan.

The 3 images from 23rd December 2001 were actually 21st December.
I mention this correction because the satellite photo is interesting.
Shows the buildup out to east of AK well with the anvil cloud across the
firth of Thames. Ts are just starting to develop over the central NI.
My recollections of this day is that Hamilton got a ts/hail about 5pm.
